Millennials Are Making Waves in the Workplace
61% of business professionals received a raise in 2017, according to an Office Pulse satisfaction survey of Canadian white-collar workers. This may have contributed to the 69% of respondents who say they feel satisfied at work. Of those receiving a raise in the last quarter, a massive 40% were Millennials.

Ups & Downs
Only 9% of panellists were promoted in Q4, which is down from the same quarter in 2016 when 17% of Canadians reported receiving a promotion. Millennials had the highest instance of promotions of all age groups, at 13%.

In terms of bonuses, there still exists a gender gap. A total of 38% of panellists received a bonus in Q4. But of those recipients, 13% of males received a bonus of $15K or higher in comparison to only 5% of females.
Despite the discrepancy in pay, more female professionals responded positively when asked if they like their boss. A total of 83% of females like their superior, while 75% of males report liking him or her. When asked why respondents like their boss, 35% reported that it’s because he or she is not a micromanager.
In contrast to the Canadian results, an Office Pulse survey conducted among American business professionals indicates significant advances for women in the workplace. More US female professionals received raises than men (67% vs. 60%) in 2017.
The Keys to Satisfaction
Raises and bonuses aren’t the only elements that factor into workplace satisfaction. When asked to elaborate on their experiences, respondents highlighted low stress levels, a good work-life balance, and challenging work as key to their overall satisfaction in their job.

Safe and sound?
A total of 72% professionals feel secure in their job this year, whereas 27% fear they will lose their job. Baby Boomers had the highest fear of losing their job last quarter in comparison to only 22% of millennials who share that anxiety.

The generation gap continues when comparing Canadians’ expectations about when they will leave their job. 11% expect to leave their current employer within the next 6 months. In fact, 15% of millennials plan to make this change within 6 months, a steep number compared to only 5% of Baby Boomers.
